On Thursday, August 1, the bell will ring for students all across Benton County for the new school year. In addition to new classes and teachers, students will face challenges associated with transitioning to new schools and transportation. It is pivotal that drivers be on high alert.
School Zones will be jam packed with children from all ages. Law enforcement officials want to reiterate the importance of safety on school days.
Camden Police Chief George Smith issued an appeal to motorists asking that all speed limits within school zones be observed. “We are going to be strictly enforcing the speed limits around all area schools,” Smith said. “We don’t want our school children endangered by people who drive carelessly.”
Smith also said an important new law went into effect this year and city officers will diligently be on the look-out for lawbreakers. “The Hands-Free Law requires drivers to use only connected devices and no handheld cellphone or mobile device while operating a motor vehicle,” he explained. “While violators are already subject for a ticket, a stiffer fine is given for school zones.”
Benton County Sheriff Kenny Christopher urged drivers to pay close attention to school crossings and school busses. “Too many motorists make judgmental mistakes when children are crossing the road or when a bus is coming to a stop. It is the law to stop and keep our children safe,” Christopher said.
Both law enforcement leaders agree that student safety is the number one priority for Benton County. “We will forcefully insure our children are safe to walk to and from school, as well as crossing in the school zones. That is and will always be a high priority of ours.”
