Vacation Ideas for Over-the-Road Truck Drivers

Whether taking a prolonged vacation or getting some rest and recreation on a mandated 34-hour layover, these vacation ideas for over-the-road truck drivers can make breaks refreshing for truckers.

Parking

If it isn’t possible to get back home in time to take a vacation with the family, there are other options. The biggest challenge for an OTR driver may be finding a place to park the truck.

It won’t be easy, but some truck stops allow multi-day parking. Or you may be able to arrange parking with a sympathetic big-box store manager. There are also several national parks and popular attractions that have truck parking. Additionally, you can check trucker apps that find truck stops near destinations you’d like to visit.

If you’re driving your truck in the summer, remember to take precautions. The same is true for winter, especially in mountain areas. Have emergency supplies with you, tell your family where you’ll be and how long you’ll be there, and keep your phone charged up! Here are some vacation ideas for over-the-road truck drivers.

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls, lying between Buffalo, New York, and Toronto, is a must-see destination. Climb the observation tower or take a tour on the famous Maid of the Mist boat. You can park your truck in parking lot three.

Biosphere 2

The University of Arizona operates biosphere 2. It’s in the town of Oracle, AZ, about 30 miles northeast of Tucson. The over three-acre site was originally an enclosed environment that would test humans’ ability to survive in space. When the university took it over, the focus changed to sustainability here on Earth. Take a guided tour of its indoor coral reef, savannah, rainforest, and wetlands featuring mangroves.

Oracle is also an international dark sky community committed to reducing light pollution. This makes it an outstanding place for stargazing at night.

Lake Tahoe

Stradling the California and Utah border is Lake Tahoe, a stunningly clear alpine lake surrounded by mountains and resorts. Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in the US and offers both summer and winter recreation. Whether you prefer boating and kayaking or skiing and snowboarding, the Lake Tahoe area will offer activities you enjoy. There are truck stops near South Lake Tahoe, but you’ll still have to rent a car to get close to the lake itself. But the views and clean mountain air are worth it!
