Even with the threat of rain looming above, more than 80 participants gathered at the Camden Court Square on Saturday evening, Sept. 10, for the United We Stand 5K Run and Community Event. All came to pay tribute to those lost on 9/11 and to support our Benton County fire departments and rescue squad.
Members of Camden’s American Legion Color Guard presented the colors and completed a patriotic program before the race to commemorate Patriot Day and show respect and remembrance of the 9/11 victims, along with all those U.S. service members who have lost their lives or made sacrifices over the ensuing years in the “war on terror.”
Firefighters from several of the VFD’s in the county geared up to walk the 5K in honor of the first responders lost on 9/11. The guys donned full turnout gear, a hot and heavy combination of fire-retardant apparel, hats, boots, and tanks, to walk the 3.1 miles. Several other firefighters ran the 5K as their show of respect.
“With all of our sponsors, participants, and donors, we were able to meet our fundraising goal of $10,000, meaning that we will be able to give $1,000 to each fire department in Benton County and to the rescue squad,” said Katelyn Spivey, with the Camden Downtown Business Association. “We are very grateful to all who participated in or attended the event.”
