When you own your own home, some things become a lot more important to you than you ever thought they would. One of the most common ones is learning to care about your lawn. The outside of your house is as much part of your home as the inside is, after all. Lawn care can be tricky, especially as weather changes throughout the year. We’ve compiled the most important lawn care for every season to help you successfully navigate those transitions and have a lawn you can be proud of.

Winter

When you live in a place with inclement weather, winter isn’t a time for actual lawn care. However, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do. You’ll want to get ready for spring as soon as possible. Make sure to sharpen or replace your mower’s blades, remove any winter weeds that need pop up, and keep your lawn clear of debris and stones. This will help ensure you’re ready to go when the snow melts.

Spring

Once spring has sprung, there’s a lot to do. One of the first things you’ll want to do is aerate and dethatch all of the built-up foliage from winter so your grass can breathe. This will also free up space for fertilizer, which your grass will desperately need. As the weather gets warmer, it’s a good idea to use some preventative herbicides in order to reduce the number of weeds you’ll get. It’s also important to repair any bare spots that developed over the winter.

Summer

A lot changes when summer hits. Watering becomes an even greater concern, and the frequency at which you’ll need to water your grass will depend on your local weather. When you mow your lawn, leave it a little bit longer than you did in the spring, as this will provide more shade for your grass. Now is also a good time to test your lawn for nutrient levels and check to make sure there aren’t any grubs growing deep in your grass’ roots.

Autumn

There’s a lot to do in autumn, and most of it deals with preparing everything for winter. Fallen leaves present a lot of problems for a lawn. These leaves can bunch up and start to choke out your grass’ roots, but they also make great fertilizer. Mowing through these fallen leaves will spread this free fertilizer throughout your whole lawn, getting it ready for winter’s frost.

Now that you know the most important lawn care for every season, you can have a beautiful lawn no matter what part of the year it may be.
