On Monday, the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services posted an announcement of funding for youth and young adult suicide prevention and mental health awareness. This funding is a result of the fiscal year 2020 budget that was approved by the General Assembly which contained $500,000 in recurring funding for this purpose.

The goals of the program include: expand and enhance existing, outcome-based suicide prevention activities in Tennessee; educate key stakeholders on the risk and warning signs of youth and young adult suicide, and how it can be prevented; reduce the stigma associated with mental illnesses, increase public awareness through mental health education, and create a positive change in attitudes and beliefs on mental health; and establish, expand, and strengthen partnerships between community behavioral health providers, child welfare, education, youth and families, and other key stakeholders to maximize awareness of local, state, and/or national resources.
State Representative Bruce Griffey said, “I received the information about this grant opportunity based on funding provided by the General Assembly. Please share it with any organization in Benton County who has some role in community behavioral health, child welfare, education or youth and families and you think might be interested in applying for funding. The application deadline is June 18.”
