Sixty-seven-year old Martha Hughes was reportedly found dead in her burning home in Eva, the afternoon of September 4. Eva Fire Chief David Tuck said, “We were called out roughly around 3 p.m. for a structure fire. By the time we arrived on the scene, the house was fully engulfed.”

Tuck said additional crews from Camden, Sandy River and Chalk Level Fire Departments assisted with the fire at 882 Chestnut Hill Rd. Other agencies on the scene included the state’s Bomb and Arson agency, as well as the Benton County Sheriff’s Department.

According to Tuck, the house was a total loss. The woman’s body has been transported for an autopsy. Investigators will know more once it is completed.

Tuck said, “I would like to thank everyone for their hard work. All of our departments have great groups of people that can work together in a time of need. Our citizens should be proud of the men and woman who volunteer to serve them.”
