Ways to Start Gardening Without a Yard

Posted

If you have a green thumb but no backyard to have any kind of a garden, you don’t have to give up on the idea! Whether you want to grow flowers or vegetables, there are so many ways to start gardening without a yard that you can pick and choose from. Keeping happy plants will make you happy in turn, even if you don’t have much space to work with.

Balcony and Patio Gardening

Does your apartment or condo have a balcony or patio? In that case, you have the perfect space for a small garden! The size of your container or box that you use will be important to keep in mind when deciding what you want to grow. Things like herbs and flowers take up less space than vegetables, so consider that if you want to save some outdoor space for yourself. Depending on your location, you might even be able to grow a small fruit tree.

Keep the Weather in Mind

Remember to take your plants indoors to keep them safe during inclement weather or cold seasons. Do your research to figure out which plants are happiest in your area’s seasons. A lemon tree might thrive in a warm, tropical environment but shrivel up in a cold environment. Certain plants enjoy sunlight more than others, and some plants even prefer shade to sunlight. Whenever there’s the threat of severe weather or damaging winds, make sure that your plants are not at risk of toppling over. It might be best to keep them inside if there’s danger.

Stay Solely Indoors

If you want to look for plants that are happy enough growing inside, you can do that as well. Some plants don’t need too much to be happy. Flowers and succulents especially can often survive inside without any struggle. If you have the room, some vegetables can be grown inside without an issue! Root vegetables, like potatoes or carrots, can grow in your house if you give them a big enough container and good soil.

Start a Hydroponic Garden

Hydroponic gardens aren’t just for science labs—you can start one too! As one of the more unique ways to start gardening without a yard, hydroponic gardens require more maintenance and yield bigger rewards. There are many benefits to hydroponic gardening, but the biggest one is that plants will use the space you have more efficiently. Because you aren’t using soil, though, you will need to manually feed the plants nutrients through the water. This form of a garden can allow you to consider different plants that you normally wouldn’t be able to.

Find a Community Garden

If gardening in your abode isn’t possible, you might be able to find a community of gardeners to share space with. Check within your apartment or condo complex or on social media to see if anyone can point you in the right direction; maybe you could even start one up yourself. Follow community guidelines and have some fun!
