Tigers, Lions, Red Devils mix it up at Rumble in the Jungle

Posted

The annual final scrimmage of the preseason between Camden Central Lions and Hollow Rock-Bruceton Tigers took a new twist Friday Night as the South Fulton Red Devils were added to the mix at this year’s Rumble in the Jungle.

The concept is good as both South Fulton and Hollow Rock-Bruceton are small schools that don’t have the depth that Camden possesses. The Lions JV and varsity alternated during the four-quarter contest against the Red Devils and Tigers.

First Quarter

The first quarter pitted the South Fulton JV against the Camden JV. South Fulton got the only score of the contest by way of a touchdown pass. Turnovers hurt the Lion offense, which produced one drive deep into Red Devil territory before turning the ball over by way of a fumble.

In all, the Camden JV turned the ball over three times. Excluding the turnovers, the offensive unit appeared potent and moved the ball effectively. At the end of the JV contest, South Fulton held a 7-0 lead.

Second Quarter

The second quarter saw the Lions varsity dominate the Red Devil varsity 27-0. Kade Lopez got the first Camden score at the 11:11 mark by way of 65-yard run on a misdirection play. The extra point kick was good giving the Lions a 7-0 lead.

Mason Howard produced the next score by way of a 35-yard pass run from Quinton Wilson, and a successful extra point kick pushed the Lions’ lead to 13-0.

South Fulton had one long drive that stalled at the Camden 20-yard line with 4:25 remaining in the quarter.

Darius Jones raced 65 yards for the third Lions’ score with 3:47 remaining in the contest. The extra point kick pushed the Camden lead to 20-0.

The final score occurred in the closing moments of the contest when Brennan Smith raced into the end zone from 45 yards out. The extra point provided the final 27-0 margin in favor of Camden.

Third Quarter

The third quarter featured the varsity squads from Camden and Hollow Rock-Bruceton. The contest proved to be a good match with Camden winning 6-0 as the result of a 65-yard run by Darius Jones. Both teams played well on both sides of the ball.

Fourth Quarter

The Tiger JV won the final contest 7-0 as Thomas Crews raced 75 yards for the score. Mason Binkley kicked the extra point. As with the previous contest, the teams appeared evenly matched.

Friday Games

Next Friday both the Lions and Tigers will be at home for their season openers against non-district opponents.

The Lions will host the Waverly Tigers in the latest edition of the “Battle for the Bridge.” This game is always a good measuring stick for both teams to determine where they are in their development. As this is a heated rivalry, it would be a good idea to arrive early for the 7:30 p.m. contest, as seating will be at a premium.

The Tigers will host the West Carroll War Eagles. As with the Camden-Waverly contest, this contest will also be a good indicator of things to come. During the last five years, the series between the Tigers and War Eagles has been competitive with all the contests being settled by a touchdown or less. West Carroll won by a single point last year at Atwood. Game time is 7 p.m.

As always, fans are encouraged to attend as many games as possible to support their favorite team. But for those who can’t attend in person, all Camden games are broadcast live on WRJB 95.9, while all Tiger games are broadcast live on The Catfish 99.7. Both games are also streamed live on wrjbradio.com.

Following the radio broadcasts, be sure to tune into the Maddox Scoreboard Show hosted by Luke Crutchfield and Dylan Powley. The Scoreboard is sponsored by Maddox Insurance, with offices in Huntingdon, Camden, and McKenzie.
