Lady Lions start district tournament as second seed

Posted

The Lady Lions completed regular season play last week, ending with an overall record of 17-13, and finishing 8-2 in district play. Headed into the District 11-AA Tournament, they stand as second seed in the West Division.

“We wanted to play a challenging schedule down the stretch with a tournament at Brentwood and some strong non-district competition,” said Coach Adam Blackburn. “We didn’t win as many games as we wanted, but we hope these games have prepared us well for the upcoming district tournament. There are several strong teams in our district, so we will need to play our best to move on to region play.”

Going into the tournament, the West Division of District 11-AA stands as Waverly, Camden, Hickman County, and Lewis County. The line up in the East Division is Creek Wood, Stewart County, Fairview, and East Hickman.

Waverly

Despite an effort to make a seventh-inning comeback in the game against Waverly last week, the Lady Lions lost 4-6. Abby Berry, Rylee Rushing, and Reagan Wallace all drove in runs in the seventh to raise the score, but the comeback fell short.

CHS fell behind early, with Waverly scoring on an error in the first inning. The Tigers picked up four more runs in the fourth, and scored their final run in the seventh to secure the first seed position in the West Division.

Alix Hampton took the loss for the Lady Lions. She allowed five hits and six runs over six innings, striking out two. The Lady Lions had six hits in the game, with Rushing leading the team with two hits in three at bats.

East Hickman

In a make-up game on April 24, Wallace pitched a winner, throwing a complete shutout and leading the Lady Lions to a 11-0 victory over East Hickman. She surrendered no runs on two hits over five innings, striking out five and walking one.

The Ladies tallied 11 hits in the game. Hampton led the team to victory by driving in five runs, going 3/3 at the plate and collecting a home run in the second inning. Brenna Caldwell and Rylee Pafford also managed multiple hits. The Ladies ran wild around the diamond with six stolen bases, with Sarah Bradford in the lead with two.

Huntingdon

Camden nabbed the lead late in the game in a 10-7 victory over Huntingdon on April 25. The game was tied at six in the bottom of the sixth when Hampton singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run. Hampton pitched the victory, too, allowing 10 hits and seven runs over seven innings, striking out six.

The base paths were crowded in this high-scoring game, with the Lady Lions collecting 10 hits while Huntingdon had 11. Berry and Briley Hardin each managed two hits for the Ladies, and Brenna Caldwell went deep for a homerun in the sixth inning.

Brentwood Tournament

The Lady Lions went on the road to Brentwood on Saturday, April 27. Despite solid turns at bat, CHS scored only 4 runs in two games, dropping both games.

The first game was a 3-7 loss. CHS fell behind early and couldn’t find a way back despite out-hitting Covington 13 to 8. Berry, Caldwell, Jay Morgan Dobson, Hardin, and Rushing all had multiple hits. Hampton took the loss, allowing eight hits and seven runs while striking out two over six innings.

The team initially fared better in their second game, but lost the lead late in the game to fall 1-5 to Arlington. Hampton again took the loss, going six innings, allowing eight hits and five runs while striking out six. CHS scattered six hits in the game to Arlington’s eight. Caldwell and Dobson each managed two hits for the Ladies.

Upcoming Games

Camden will host Fairview, the number three seed from the East Division of District 11-AA, in their first game of the double elimination district tournament on Wednesday, May 1. The game will begin at Stacey Baker Field at 5:30 p.m.
