Home Hacks | How to Make Your Home Look Rustic

Posted

A hot trend in home decorating right now is rustic-tech chic. It’s a favorite style for older millennial home buyers. Rustic-tech is a mashup of earth tones, hardwood floors, stone finishes, rough timber accents, and modern appliances. Think the Flintstones and the Jetsons rolled into one. This decorating style emphasizes the rustic aspect a bit more: what’s old never really goes out of style, and finding old barn wood and other rustic accents is usually inexpensive. The rustic style alone has been trending for a while, and there are a lot of options out there to help make your home look rustic. You can get that rustic look on the cheap if you stick to a few guidelines.

Use Reclaimed Barn Wood

Reclaimed wood is the quickest way to get rustic. Its popularity means many companies sell it, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding it. Use reclaimed wood to create an accent wall or faux support beams on the ceiling. If you want to redecorate on a smaller scale, create some rustic wooden shelves for every room. Make sure to get some heavy-duty brackets for support—they’ll allow the shelves to hold heavier items such as Bluetooth speakers and potted plants.

Repurpose Antiques

Reclaiming and salvaging isn’t limited to pieces of lumber. You can find antique pieces of furniture and give them a makeover—and new lives. Try adding to your rustic décor by refurbishing an old dresser and repurposing it as a bathroom vanity. Replace the top of the dresser with lighter-colored marble countertops for a unique look.

Use Stone Accents

Old wood isn’t the only thing that can make a room look rustic. Use stone accents around the house to add earthy tones and texture. You can glue tiles with a stone-like finish to a wall as backsplash or to create an accent wall. Stone accents will give any room a cozy, outdoor feel.

Utilize Warm, Earthy Tones

When painting your walls, use rustic colors that emulate the outdoors. Reddish and yellowish browns, deep burgundies, and slate grays evoke autumn and everything that’s great about being outside. Using those colors around the house, combined with your repurposed antiques and reclaimed woods, will add to the rustic look you want.
