If you’re starting to your plan your fall vacation getaway, you’re in luck. There are plenty of beautiful towns for you to get into the autumnal spirit. Whether its fall festivals, pumpkin patches, breathtaking fall foliage, or apple picking, some towns just do it better than others. Check out some of the best small towns for fall travel—enjoy America’s favorite season in some of the greatest places!

Fall in Love with These Small Towns

Gatlinburg, Tennessee

One of the best places to see fall foliage is the Smoky Mountains, and Gatlinburg is the mountain town that will take you there. Besides hikes through the wonderful leaves, the town also puts on wonderful autumn festivals, such as the Sugarlands Mountainfest. It’s a four-day festival with live music, competitive races, and other fun fall activities.

Lake Placid Village, New York

Upstate New York and the breathtaking Adirondacks have been a well-kept secret for years. The secret’s out—Lake Placid and the surrounding towns will enchant you, and you’ll never want to leave. Visit in the fall to see the gorgeous hues of scarlet, orange, and gold. Lake Placid Village has all that plus the Flaming Leaves Festival; there’s a ski jumping competition, paint and sip, crafts, and more!

Montgomery, Vermont

A town in Vermont always has to be on a list of best small towns for fall travel, but Montgomery made this list for a few reasons. Even though Stowe is an incredible option, it gets packed in the fall. Montgomery keeps that small town feel and offers so much more. They have the most covered bridges in one town, and when you pair that with the bountiful fall foliage, it’s hard not to fall in love.

Newport, Rhode Island

If you’ve ever wanted to go sailing in the fall, head to Newport for that and more. The attractions of Newport are endless, and in the fall, they’re even more phenomenal. There are dozens of apple orchards, beaches (fall sunsets are marvelous), and mansions that are more impressive when surrounded by colorful foliage. There are multiple harvest festivals, craft fests, and wine weekends to entertain you—don’t miss it.

Leavenworth, Washington

This Bavarian-styled village found in the Cascade Mountains is an absolute gem in autumn. Visiting this small town is a wonderful idea any time of year, but the fall brings bewitching colors and an enchanting atmosphere. There’s something going on every weekend, from the Autumn Leaf Festival, where they celebrate the leaves turning colors, to their Oktoberfest, which lasts three weekends.

Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Bethlehem is great in the fall for many reasons. There’s the mesmerizing fall foliage found in the Lehigh Valley, the various harvest festivals, and the many scary ghost tours. It’s a quaint little town that’s perfect for a quiet weekend getaway. From their wine and harvest festivals to film festivals and apple jams, you’re sure to feel content and relaxed by the end of your trip.
