Chronicle family grows with acquisition of AHP

Posted

What began in January, 1983 with the purchase of its first newspaper in Huntingdon has expanded once again with the addition of four more paid circulation newspapers and a free Shopper.

On April 1 Magic Valley Publishing Co. (MVP) purchased the Tennessee newspapers under the flag of American Hometown Newspapers.

The purchase includes the Wayne County News in Waynesboro, the Chester County Independent in Henderson, the Collierville Herald and The Leader in Covington along with The Shoppers News in the Jackson area.

“Discussions actually began a few years ago with AHP,” said Dennis Richardson, MVP president. “They also have newspapers in Oklahoma, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida but I have been only interested in their Tennessee group. It includes a group of very strong publications that expands our company’s footprint from Linden to Memphis and along U.S 51.”

The MVP family now includes 13 newspaper style publications (10 subscriber-based publications and three free publications plus Southern Outdoor Sports, the areas nicest and fastest-growing outdoor publication). All paid publications are not only members of the Tennessee Press Association (TPA) but also the National Newspaper Association (NNA).

The new acquisitions join The Crockett County Times, Lake County Banner, Camden Chronicle, Carroll County News-Leader, Waverly News-Democrat, Waverly Shopper’s Guide and the Buffalo River Review.

“We believe in the future of hometown newspapers,” said Richardson. “We strive to provide strong local content presented in a refreshing and factual style.”

Richardson said he gives God the glory for the growth of MVP and that growth cannot be possible without the tireless efforts of sons Daniel and Matthew Richardson and his wife, Lisa.
