The Camden Lady Lions showcased their defensive tenacity on Tuesday, Dec. 10, securing a hard-fought 38-29 victory over the Milan Lady Bulldogs on their home court.
The game was a defensive battle throughout, with neither team able to establish a significant lead in the first three quarters. The Lady Bulldogs held a slim 6-4 advantage after the first quarter, but Camden fought back to take a 12-10 lead into halftime. Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm as strong defenses dominated the game, limiting scoring opportunities.
Camden maintained a narrow 26-24 lead heading into the final quarter, thanks in part to Addie Melton’s two critical 3-point baskets during the third quarter. Determined to secure their second win of the season, the Lady Lions turned up the defensive pressure in the fourth quarter, holding Milan to just five points.
Junior point guard Abbi-Grace Wallace was instrumental in sealing the win, scoring six points in the fourth quarter. Her composure in high-pressure moments was evident as she sank all four of her free throw attempts during critical stretches. The Lady Lions’ relentless defense and timely scoring allowed them to extend their lead and secure the victory.
Wallace led Camden’s scoring with 12 points, followed by Melton with 9 points, Avery Wright with 7, and Carson Douglas with 4. Kayedence Christopher and Bailey Berry each added 3 points. Every point was crucial in a game where defense set the tone. The win was especially meaningful as it avenged a narrow loss to Milan earlier in the season.
Camden faced a tougher challenge later in the week against Decatur County Riverside on Friday, Dec. 13. Riverside jumped out to a commanding 20-4 lead in the first quarter and maintained control throughout the game, handing Camden a 54-27 loss.
Offensive struggles plagued the Lady Lions, with Bailey Berry leading the team with 12 points. Additional contributions came from Emma Pierce (4), Wallace (3), Ava Maines (3), Wright (2), Douglas (2), and Kylee Bacheler (1).
“Our defense and rebounding continue to be pretty good, but we have got to be better at our consistency on offense,” said Coach John Lambright following the game.
Looking ahead, Camden will host Henry County on Tuesday, Dec. 17, before traveling to Houston County on Friday, Dec. 20. Despite early-season injuries, the Lady Lions aim to grow and refine their game as they prepare for district play in January.
