Biker enthusiasts from an organization based in Big Sandy joined forces with the Benton County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) last Saturday, Aug. 20, to conduct a toy run that will benefit many deserving children come Christmas.

Stating on their Facebook Page “Let’s give every child a smile for Christmas,” the toy run was headed by the “Other Brothers – Big Sandy Brothers by Choice” motorcycle club and held at the Camden Walmart parking lot. Members of the group had been collecting toys for several days prior to last Saturday and received more donations during their time at Walmart.

While BCSO has hosted a toy and coat drive for several years now, this was the inaugural participation with the effort for Other Brothers. Sheriff Kenny Christopher said he talked earlier this year with some club members who wanted to assist with collecting toys to give out at the holidays.

“We are more than happy to have their help. Although the toys won’t be distributed until Christmas, they wanted to get an early start. The Other Brothers are entirely responsible for what is going on today,” Christopher said. “We have two vehicles full of toys thanks to their efforts and have also received some cash donations. They just want to help the community and I’m proud to be here with them.”

Richard Collier, a member of Other Brothers, said the group was glad to help BCSO with such a worthwhile project. He also gave thanks to other groups in the community and some that are located out of the county that supported Other Brothers with donations and contributions to the toy run.

Rick Siler, another Other Brother member, added that club members are very blessed to be able to do projects that help with needs of the community. “We couldn’t do any of the things we do without guidance and direction from the good Lord above and I thank Him for giving us this opportunity to assist others,” he said.

Following the Saturday morning event at Walmart, Christopher escorted the caravan of two vehicles and 54 motorcycles to the New Beginnings Annex on South Forrest Avenue to unloaded and store the donations. Volunteers placed all the donations in a storage room where they’ll remain until time for the BCSO distribution event in December.

Although the toy run was held last Saturday, Christopher wanted to remind everyone that toys and coats are collected all year long by BCSO. Items for donation as well as monetary contributions can be left at the BCSO office on Rosemary Avenue in Camden.

While the toy run was geared towards the holidays, Collier noted that there are other times when individuals may need help. If so, the Other Brothers are glad to help when they can.

“We’ve had two very successful fundraisers in the past year to help local citizens after accidents and sickness. Our community has always been very generous when a need arises,” he said. “I encourage everyone to go out of their way to help their neighbors whenever the need arises, regardless of the time of year. We all have to help each other.”
