Most Common Causes of Vehicle Paint Damage

Your vehicle’s paint job is one of the first things people notice. Whether driving a brand-new car off the lot or a well-loved used car, you want your paint job to be top tier. Unfortunately, paint damage is an all-too-common occurrence.

These are five of the most common causes of vehicle paint damage and what you can do to prevent them.

Bird Droppings

We’ve all been there—you’re driving along and a bird does its business on your windshield or hood. If you don’t remove bird droppings quickly, they can seep into your paint and cause permanent damage. The best way to remove bird droppings is with a soft cloth or sponge and a solution of warm water and dish soap. Gently blot the droppings until they come off, then rinse the area with clean water.

Tree Sap

If you park under a tree, chances are you’ll find sap on your car at some point. Tree sap can be difficult to remove, and if it’s left on your paint for too long, it can cause discoloration. The best way to remove tree sap is with a solution of equal parts rubbing alcohol and water. Saturate a soft cloth with the solution and gently rub the sap until it comes off. You may need a toothbrush or soft-bristled brush to loosen stubborn sap.

Sun Damage

The sun’s UV rays can also damage your car‘s paint job. Over time, sunlight can cause fading, chalking, and even cracking. To protect your car‘s paint from sun damage, park in shady areas whenever possible and invest in a good quality car cover. You can also use a ceramic coating to protect your car from heat. This keeps your vehicle clean and waxed, as a dirty or un-waxed car will absorb more heat from the sun.

Car Washes

Automatic car washes may be convenient, but they can also be hard on your paint job. The harsh chemicals and abrasive brushes can strip away wax and protective sealants, leaving your paint vulnerable to further damage. If you must use an automatic car wash, opt for soft cloth rather than abrasive brushes. Better yet, wash your car by hand using mild soap and plenty of water pressure.

Fuel Spills

If you accidentally spill gasoline on your car, you should immediately clean it up. Fuel can cause serious damage to your paint job if it’s left to sit for too long. To clean up a fuel spill, start by blotting the area with a dry rag to absorb as much fuel as possible. Use warm water and dish soap to remove any remaining residue, then rinse the area with clean water and dry it with a clean towel.

These are five of the most common causes of vehicle paint damage. Follow the tips to prevent damage in these areas, and your car should have a beautiful paint job for years to come.
