The use of illegal drugs continues to trouble West Tennessee, and Benton County is no exception. Fortunately, the hard-working officers of the 24th District Drug Task Force (DTF), Benton County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), and the Big Sandy and Camden Police departments remain vigilant on the job.

Following up on a recent investigation, the DTF obtained a warrant to search the property of Erick Dwayne Jones, 43, of Old Hwy. 69A in Camden. Jones was at home with Kristen Lynn Jones when the warrant was served by DTF officers, and a subsequent search of the home revealed several baggies of what appeared to be marijuana, 56 Xanax pills, $1,006 in cash, and drug paraphernalia such as pipes, grinders, and scales. When the marijuana was weighed, it exceeded 130 grams.

Both Erick and Kristen Jones were arrested by DTF officers, transported to the Benton County Jail, and booked on charges of manufacture/deliver/sell/possession of schedules IV and VI drugs with intent and possession of unlawful drug paraphernalia. They were arraigned in Benton County General Sessions court on Aug. 24.

On Aug. 21, BCSO deputies Chris Hatley and his canine partner Kayla stopped a vehicle driven by O’Bryan L. Tharpe for improper display of registration plates. Tharpe did not have a driver’s license with him, and also failed to provide proof of insurance. At the request of the officer, Tharpe agreed to allow his vehicle to be searched.

BCSO deputy Chris Richard arrived to assist Hatley. When the search yielded a substance in a plastic bag that appeared to be methamphetamine, vehicle passenger Savion Donte Hudson, 27, of Wright Rd. in Camden, acknowledged that the substance was his. DTF assisted with testing the substance, and it was identified as 31.5 grams of meth.

When deputies discovered that Tharpe had an outstanding warrant in New Johnsonville for failure to appear, Tharpe was surrendered to officers from that jurisdiction and further charged with driving without license, violation of financial responsibility law, improper display of registration plates.

Hudson was arrested, transport to Benton County Jail, and charged with manufacture/deliver/sale/possession of schedule II and possession of unlawful drug paraphernalia. He remains in Benton County Jail on a $10,000 bond at this time.
