You’ve likely seen playgrounds suited for adolescents and playgrounds suited for toddlers, but the best playgrounds offer equipment for everyone. This usually comes down to different sections with age-appropriate equipment, but what do different children need? Learn how you can design a playground for all ages.

Toddlers

Exploration and sensory interaction are the most important things to focus on for toddlers (with safety in mind, of course). The perfect play area for toddlers offers space to explore under close supervision. Covered equipment is a great way to go as toddlers are particularly susceptible to prolonged sun exposure. Small slides and activities that stay low to the ground are ideal.

Two to Five

Kids a little older than toddlers require some of the same considerations but with more physical challenges. Activities that allow them to climb and test their limits safely, like ramps, rung ladders, and swings, are perfect at this age. Keep equipment close to the ground to protect them (and to ensure the equipment appears safe and inviting).

Five to 12

Kids in this age group have varying skill levels, but almost all of them want to feel challenged when at play. This is a wonderful opportunity to allow kids to hone fine motor skills and practice balance. Bigger slides, ladders, and climbing equipment are good options to keep equipment safe yet enticing.

Adolescents (and Up)

For older kids (and even adults), it’s a good idea to offer a section of the playground that’s more focused on fitness and competition. If a playground is nothing but slides and monkey bars, teens are likely to lose interest over time and neglect their physical fitness. Providing a space to play team sports like volleyball or basketball encourages older kids to stay active.

The best playgrounds strike a balance between safety and challenge. The most effective way to design a playground for all ages is to offer mental and physical stimulation to children while keeping the environment safe and controlled.
