FATAL COLLISION – Within 30 minutes of a collision on Hwy. 641 S. on Friday, multiple agencies and numerous volunteers worked to secure the scene of the accident that ended the life of Jonathan Long.

At 5:45 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28, two vehicles collided head on in Benton County on Hwy. 641 near James Walker Road, resulting in the death of one of the drivers. This evening accident claimed the life of Jonathan Hugh Long II, age 30, of Camden.

Long was driving a Kia Sorento SUV, which collided directly with a Freightliner tractor trailer driven by Steven McAlpin, of Fort Cobb, Okla., who was not injured.

According to the preliminary report released by the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), both drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident. The report did not indicate whether either driver was at fault, stating simply that the two vehicles collided.

Benton County’s 911 dispatch received notice of the accident and immediately sent Benton County Sheriff’s Office deputies to the scene. Ultimately, in addition to BCSO deputies, Sheriff Kenny Christopher, emergency medical services, Benton County Rescue Squad volunteers, Chalk Level Fire Department volunteers, EMA officials, and a member of the medical examiner’s office responded to the location of the collision.

County units assisted with traffic control while THP worked the fatal accident. Traffic came to a standstill in both lanes of travel along Hwy. 641 while first responders worked to secure the scene.

It was clear from early on that Long had not survived the crash, and the gravity of a young life lost weighed heavily on each person who was there to cope with the aftermath of the tragic crash.

Funeral services for Long are Thursday, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m. at Plunk Funeral Home with Russ Wilkins officiating. Visitation was Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. and Thursday morning from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Chalk Hill Cemetery.
