Camden’s Lions got their region football campaign off and running with a blow out of the Harpeth Indians on the reservation in Kingston Springs.
Next up are the 3-0 Huntingdon Mustangs at the million-dollar field at Paul Ward Stadium. Huntingdon is not in the region and the game should be good experience for the Lions as the region race continues the rest of the season.
“Huntingdon is very fast and physical on both sides of the ball,” said Camden head coach William Blow. “They run a single wing offense like we do and a 3-4 defense.”
Camden 42, Harpeth 14
After an unsettled start Camden reeled off three touchdowns in the first quarter to take a 20-0 lead and extended that to 34-6 at the half and a 42-14 final score.
The Lions were apparently a little too raring to go with two consecutive off sides penalties to open the game. They got those yards (and more) back quickly. On 1st and 20 senior Darius Jones ran for 9 and then Kade Lopez ripped off a 20-yard gainer to the Harpeth 40.
Jones scored on the next play. Camden missed the extra point and took a 6-0 lead.
Lion Jacob Hooten set his team up in business again when he recovered a fumble at the Harpeth 36 on the second offensive play.
Camden used a pass and a series of runs and Jones scored again on a 4-yard run. The try for two points again failed and Camden led 12-0.
Harpeth put together a respectable drive but fizzled on a turnover on downs at the Camden 29.
On the next series Camden senior quarterback Quinten Wilson broke a 39-yard run on the first play; Lopez ran for 17 and Jones scored his third touchdown. The two-point conversion made it 20-0.
Jones scored his fourth touchdown on a 6-yard run and the two-point run made it 28-0
After a Harpeth touchdown a Wilson to Trenton Moore touchdown pass made it 34-6.
Tucker Jackson scored Camden’s last points on a 9-yard touchdown run and the two-point conversion made it 42-6.
“I was happy with our effort and our physicality at Harpeth,” Blow said. “It was good to get a region win.”
Led by Jones with 133 yards on 14 carries, and four touchdowns, Camden racked up 21 first downs to 9 for the hosts. The Lions gained 375 yards on the ground and 81 through the air as Wilson completed 4 of 6 passes.
Catching passes were Mason Howard (2 for 51 yards), Lopez and Moore, 1 each.
Wilson ran for 87 yards; Kellen Conrad for 50, Lopez 65, Jackson 30 and James Faulkner 9.
On defense, leading tacklers were Samuel Behzad and Hooten with 8 each, Corey Painter (7) and Jones (6).
Harpeth had success through the air with 12 of 16 pass completions for 104 yards. The quarterback was intercepted once.
