It’s time to swap gears. We’re coming inside from the cold and if you’re going to the “Lions’ Den” at CHS, I promise you it’s hot. The Lions boys’ and girls’ teams kicked off their regular season play on Nov. 15 against Riverside High School. Since then, the Lions have played three games and have been as good as they were predicted to be.

The Lions have won all three of their contests in convincing fashion. They faced Riverside in their opener, winning 66-53. Senior Allan Zyla led the team with 16 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal. Behind him, Wizdom Laws had 15 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 block. Briley Siler and Kaden Story each had 13 points in the contest with multiple assists. The team completed 75 percent of their free throw shots and were 44 percent from the floor.

The girls team struggled to get started against Riverside, eventually losing 43-48 after a hard-fought match. Bailey Morris led the Lions with 21 points, Miley Hartney followed with 8, and Adalyn Furr finished with 5 points in the game.

The Lions next home game was against Lexington High School, where both teams had outstanding performances and won their games.

The boys team fired up early with a massive toss from Story to Laws, and they never looked back, beating Lexington 68-35. It was an outstanding performance throughout.

Story led with 15 points, 6 assists, 3 steals, and 2 rebounds. Laws netted 12 points, 1 steal, and 3 rebounds. Allan Zyla also had 12 points, 3 steals, 2 assists, and 2 rebounds. Nine CHS players had points in the game and every player on the team recorded some type of stat.

The Lady Lions had a battle but won their first game of the season 50-44 against Lexington. The game was tough, but the Ladies stayed in it all the way to the final buzzer. Furr was 5/7 from the floor and led the Lions with 18 points. Just behind her, Morris scored 16 points and was 2/2 on three-pointers and 3/5 on the floor. Trinity Woodard was dominant on the boards and also recorded 6 points on the night.

The Lions are shaping up to have a great season, and the environment is electrifying at CHS. Lions Head Coach Dave Roberts said, “We have gotten off to a good start in the first three games this season, solid wins that have featured really balanced scoring along with good defensive efforts. We have seen good play from our five seniors, which will improve even more when Beau Smith comes back from a broken collarbone.”

Roberts emphasized that All District returnees Story, Laws, and Zyla have a lot of experience on the varsity level from the last three years and have been anchors on the offensive and defensive ends. He said that they really have produced on offense scoring and setting up teammates along with grabbing a lot of rebounds and solid defensive play.

In reviewing the strengths of other players, Roberts noted that Tucker Jackson has been providing a spark with his energetic play, adding that Ridge Bruce is another energy guy who comes in and gives 110 percent. Briley Siler has had great production coming off an ankle injury last year.

Ayden Melton has played well at the guard position with solid defense. Nowah Porter has gotten rebounds and hit shots to contribute. Aiden Pierce can knock down shots and provide length on the defensive end. Konner Comuzie plays solid defense and can hit the 3s. Isaac Moore is strong on defense and a great rebounder. Guard Gage Johnson has a lot of drive and can hit from outside.

“We still have areas for improvement, and that’s part of the process. We want to be playing our best basketball when February is here. That’s what we are focusing on as a team and staff to build towards,” Roberts concluded. “I believe that we will have a lot of fun between now and February.”

If you enjoy high school sports, come out and watch the Lions and Lady Lions give it their all on game nights. Be there and be proud of your local athletes.
