The potential is there for the Camden Lions to be far more competitive in the near future, but as for last Friday night, Oct. 14, the struggle was on. The Lions fell in an away match to the Union City Golden Tornadoes, 55-14.

Despite a dismal season on the road for the Camden Lions, a nugget of positivity can be found watching their play.

For starters, pun intended, the majority of the athletes on the “1’s and 2’s” are sophomores and juniors with many more downs to improve. Their offense has broken records continuously with their air raid capabilities.

The Lions started off on defense and Union City went to work, traveling 50 yards in five plays to score their first touchdown. Camden answered that effort with a 68-yard dart from quarterback Will Dobson to sophomore wide receiver Isaac Moore to lead the contest 7-6. This would be the last time they led in the game.

Union City settled in and put 28 unanswered points on the board before half-time, leading the Lions to the locker room with a lot of questions. Returning from half-time, it was more of the same. The Lions put 7 more on the board with a 25-yard touchdown run from running back Jaylen Boggs, but no more points were scored by them in the contest.

Offensively, Moore and senior wide receiver Tucker Jackson led the Lions. Jackson had five receptions for 54 yards and Moore had two receptions for 76 yards and 187 all-purpose yards. Defensively, Karson Goodwin and Hayden Jennette led the Lions with 11 tackles each, while Jackson had nine tackles on the night. As a team, Camden competed a total of 67 tackles, three tackles for loss, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.

Dobson etched his name in the CHS history books once again. With his 15th touchdown pass to Moore, Dobson tops the list for most all-time touchdown completions in CHS history. Moore has tied the season touchdown stat and is tied with senior wide receiver Jackson with 29 receptions on the season. Whoever catches the most balls in the next contest will hold the single season record for receptions.

As the Lions’ season is coming to a close, fans only have one more chance to see the impressive CHS offense live and in person. Be sure to show up for Senior Night at the Lions last regular season home game on Friday, Oct. 28, against Gibson County.
