A mature buck in Hendersonville was almost poached by someone using a crossbow, but it somehow survived the shot to the head. Photos of the buck with the crossbow bolt protruding from its head were posted on social media, alerting TWRA wildlife officers.

Once officers were able to locate the animal, they tranquilized the buck so they could render aid. Once it was subdued, officers removed the bolt from the animal’s head and applied medicine to the wound. The animal was then supervised until it was able to come around on its own.

Deer season is not yet open. The next opportunity to legally harvest a deer will be August 26-28, during the August “private land/antlered deer only” hunt.

This buck was shot out of season and the TWRA would like anyone with information related to this incident to contact Sumner County wildlife officer [email protected] or the Region II Office at 615-781-6622.
